CHAPTER ELEVEN
You’ve always been mine,
even when you weren’t
Sam
“Fuck, you’re a dick.”
This comes from Andrew who right now is probably sitting in his office in New York shaking his head at me in disbelief.
“Tell me how you really feel.” I let out a frustrated sigh.
It’s five in the morning here in California, and I haven’t slept at all. After I stormed out on Ashton, I drove around for hours and finally ended up here at my office. I wanted to go back home, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t deal with all the unresolved bullshit emotions last night brought up. Spending my birthday with her, her cooking for me, it was intimate in a way that we haven’t had in a long time. It felt right, us being together, celebrating together, but there were also moments of awkwardness and discomfort. Neither one of us was able to get out of our own way long enough to fully enjoy the evening.
Then there was me. Bringing up the past again, forcing her to discuss things that hurt us both, things that needed to be said but could have waited for a more appropriate time. Not on the night she was trying to do something nice for me.
“Get your ass in your car, drive back there, and tell that girl you’re sorry.” This again comes from Andrew, the only voice of reason in my life.
Being estranged from my family for this long wasn’t easy, but Andrew was the one who made reconciliation with them possible. He came back into my life at a time when I needed someone the most. I was going nowhere fast after I’d lost Ashton. It’s a miracle my boss at the garage I had been working at didn’t fire me. I came and went as I pleased, did the bare minimum, and showed up drunk half of the time. But he was a good guy, and he knew what I was going through. He knew Ashton had left me, so he cut me a break.
When Andrew came into town and looked me up, I was at my lowest low. He listened to my bullshit. He understood what I was going through, and he offered me an outlet to put all my energy into. It wasn’t the business side of things that pushed me away from my family. I never minded the business; it was the expectations they had of me. The prodigal son. I had to be perfect and nothing I wanted mattered. I had to make my way to the top working at my father’s company, and I didn’t want that. I wanted to make my own way, make my own choices, fail, succeed, and learn the ropes like anybody else. That was unacceptable for them. And when I couldn’t handle the constant pressure and never-ending disappointment, I left. I came out to California and did my own thing. I learned how to work on cars, something that I still love to do, and I did what I wanted on my own terms.
